Suffering from discomforting and embarrassing back acne? It develops when bacteria thrives in the clogged pores or hair follicles. The skin pores or hair follicles get clogged due to the buildup of excess oil, dead skin and other impurities. Back acne can also be triggered by hormonal changes, mismanaged blood sugar and improper diet.

Simple home remedies are helpful in treating the present acne and control future breakouts. Apart from that, regular exfoliation also helps to boost the effectiveness of home remedies. But if you don’t have time to spend on exfoliation daily, then you can use a good body wash meant for back acne for the same.

Home Remedies for Back Acne:

You’re about to learn 18 safe and effective methods for treating and preventing back acne and acne scars. Try them all until you find the one that works best for you.

1. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is good for dry, oily, and even aged skin. It soaks excessive sebum and oil off of the skin, clearing away dirt and other toxins in the process. It also exfoliates to remove dead skin cells.

Process:

  • Use a blender to grind 3 tablespoons plain oatmeal into a powder.
  • Pour three more tablespoons oatmeal into a clean sock and tie the end closed.
  • Run a warm bath and throw the powdered oatmeal in bath tub.
  • Take the sock into the bath with you and squeeze it regularly to replenish the oatmeal in your bath.
  • Soak for 20-30 minutes.
  • Repeat regularly.

2. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate, flushes out toxins and reduces inflammation, redness, and itchiness. It also activates the enzymes that help the body absorb potassium, vitamin D, and zinc which are essential to skin health.

Process:

  • Fill bath tub with warm water and add 1-2 cups Epsom.
  • Do not use commercial soaps, gels, or shampoos in an Epsom salt bath.
  • Instead, scrub gently with a loofah.
  • Soak for 20-30 minutes.
  • Salt absorbs liquid, so drink plenty of water after an Epsom salt bath.
  • Repeat regularly.
  • Note: Do not rub Epsom salt directly onto the skin. It is highly abrasive and may irritate skin and exacerbate back acne.
  • Note: Make sure to get plenty of calcium and magnesium in your diet while using Epsom salt treatments.

3. Sea Salt

Sea salt absorbs excess oils and moisture on the skin, preventing the growth of bacteria that cause back acne. Always use organic sea salt. Table salt contains iodine, which makes acne worse.

Process 1:

  • Add 2-3 cups sea salt to warm bath water.
  • Soak 20-30 minutes.
  • Apply a light moisturizer after a sea salt bath (skip this step if you have extremely oily skin).
  • Repeat twice daily for many breakouts otherwise follo once in a day to get rid of the back acne..

Process 2:

  • Add sea salt to water.
  • Pour solution into spray bottle.
  • Spray on back 2 times daily.
  • Let dry and wear loose clothing.

4. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory. It kills the bacteria that cause acne. It contains a compound called Terpinen – 4 – ol which has anti-microbial properties to prevent bacteria that causes and develops acne on back. Always dilute tea tree oil with water or other carrier oils to avoid irritation, itching, redness, over-drying, or blistering. The safest ratio is 5:95, or, for example, 5 ml tea tree oil to 95 ml of water.

Process:

  • Mix 2-3 drops tea tree oil with 1 cup water.
  • Use a cotton ball to apply the solution to back acne.
  • Let dry.
  • Repeat 3 times daily.
  • Store solution in bottle for further use.

5. Oatmeal and Honey Mask

Oatmeal soaks out oil, dirt, and other toxin. Honey has antibacterial property which fights against the bacteria causes acne and it’s anti-inflammatory property helps to sooth the affected area and prevents the redness and swelling

Process:

  1. Cook 3 tablespoons of oatmeal by adding water.
  2. Mix in 4 tablespoons of honey.
  3. Allow it to cool and

  5. Leave on 15-20 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) balances the body’s pH levels, fights bacteria, and reduces inflammation. Mix 2 tablespoons ACV into a glass of water and drink daily and use the process outlined below.

Process:

  1. Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 2 parts water.
  2. Pour the solution into a spray bottle.
  3. Spray it on your back before bed.
  4. Leave it on 20-25 minutes, then rinse with water.
  5. Store the spray bottle refrigerator to get cooling effect on the acne breakouts.
  6. Repeat regularly either in the day or night time to completely cure the back acne breakouts.
  7. Or you can use a cotton ball to apply on bacne.

7. Cinnamon and Honey Mask

Cinnamon contains strong anti-bacterial properties that kill the bacteria that cause acne. Honey clears away dirt, oil, and bacteria and soothes the skin.

Process:

  1. Mix 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 2 tablespoons honey, and ½ teaspoon lemon juice.
  2. Apply to back and leave on 15-25 minutes or until dry.
  3. Rinse with lukewarm water.

8. Lemon Juice

The citric acid in lemon juice is a powerful astringent that removes dead skin cells and encourages new skin growth. It dries out acne and bleaches scars.

Process:

  1. Take a shower and use a mild cleaner on your back.
  2. Pat skin dry.
  3. Use a cotton ball to apply fresh-squeezed lemon juice to your back.
  4. Let it dry and dress in loose clothing.

9. Baking Soda

  1. Mix baking soda and water to make a paste.

11. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has astringent, antifungal, emollient, and regenerative properties. It kills fungal infection, heals wounds and scars, smooths and softens skin, and encourages the growth of new cells in the affected area. Always use fresh-squeezed organic aloe vera gel instead of commercial aloe vera products.

Process:

  1. Cut open an aloe vera leaf.
  2. Scoop out gel with a spoon.
  3. Apply it to your back and let it dry.
  4. Repeat 3-4 times daily to heal back acne breakouts.

12. White Willow Bark Toner

White willow bark has salicin, which is similar to the salicylic acid found in many commercial acne products. It has anti-microbial, anti-fungal and an anti-inflammatory property which dries out blemishes, fights fungus and bacteria, and reduces inflammation and redness.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon white willow bark
  • 3 ½ tablespoons witch hazel
  • 10 drops tea tree, lavender, or black pepper oil
  • 5 tablespoons boiling water

Process:

  1. Put white willow bark in a pot.
  2. Add boiling water and let steep 10-15 minutes.
  3. Strain and add witch hazel and your choice of essential oil.
  4. Stir well and store in a bottle.
  5. Use a cotton ball to apply this solution to your back 4 times daily.

13. Lavender Oil

Lavender oil has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that kill acne and reduce swelling and redness. It also balances hormones to reduce the fluctuations that cause acne.

Process:

  1. Add 1 cup sea salt or Epsom salt and 8 drops lavender oil to warm bath water.
  2. Soak for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Repeat 1-3 times in a week based on your acne.

14. Witch Hazel

The twigs, bark, and leaves of witch hazel contain catechol tannin, an active astringent that cleanses skin and reduces redness and inflammation, leaving skin moisturized and refreshed. You can find distilled witch hazel in most health stores.

Process:

  1. Use a cotton ball to apply a few drops of distilled witch hazel to acne.
  2. Allow it to dry.
  3. Repeat 3 times daily to treat back acne.
  4. Note: you can add tea tree oil for better results.

15. Sandalwood Powder

Sandalwood powder has anti-microbial properties that kill the bacteria that cause acne, and it’s anti-inflammatory property soothes the pain, reduces inflammation and redness.

Process 1:

  1. Mix sandalwood powder and rosewater to make a fine paste.
  2. Apply to back and leave on 30-40 minutes.

Process:

  1. Mix 1 teaspoon clove oil with 10 teaspoons of either olive oil, grapeseed oil, coconut oil or almond oil.
  2. Use a cotton ball to apply this solution directly to breakouts, avoiding healthy skin.
  3. Repeat 2-3 times a week.

17. Orange Peel

Orange peel contains retinol, which helps to remove dead skin cells and regenerate new ones. It also has vitamin C, which helps fade acne scars.

Process:

  1. Dry an orange peel.
  2. Put it in a blender with water.
  3. Add 3 tablespoons honey and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon and blend again to make a paste.
  4. Apply the paste to your back and leave it until it gets dry.
  5. Rinse with warm water.
  6. Note: You can also mix powdered orange peel with water to make a paste and leave it on 15 minutes.

18. Healthy Diet

A healthy, balanced diet goes a long way in treating acne and other health and beauty problems. Incorporate the following foods to enhance the effects of the other treatments listed in this article.

  • Drink plenty of water to flush toxins and bacteria from the body.
  • Eat whole grains.
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens.
  • Avoid greasy, spicy, salty, sugary, and fatty foods.
  • Avoid processed foods.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Include wheatgrass, aloe vera and lime which plays an important part to heal the acne.

  • Maintain good hygiene and keep skin clean and dry. use antibacterial or neem based soaps.
  • Use gentle cleansers and avoid vigorous scrubbing.
  • Shower immediately after physical activity that makes you sweat.
  • Apply Moister after bath to nourish back skin. Use water-based moisturizers rather than oil-based ones. Oil based moisturizer clog the pores and causes blackheads, pimples and other symptoms of acne
  • Lavender oil, tea tree oil, and jojoba oil, will moisturize while limiting sebum production, but be sure to dilute them before use.
  • Apply a mask prepared with tomato (rich in vitamin A & C that reduces the pores), oatmeal (removes excess oil from the pores), lemon (natural astringent that removes the excess oil from the pores of the skin) and mint (anti-inflammatory that reduces the pain).
  • Sleep on your sides instead of your back and keep bedding clean.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing.
  • Avoid wearing backpacks.
  • Use a laundry detergent meant for sensitive skin.
  • If you don’t see results after 6 weeks with these treatments, consult a doctor.
  • Be patient and persistent. Home remedies take time.

    1. Usually Acne will not go away quickly. Apart from using home remedies, you have to exfoliate and moisturize regularly to boost up the healing process.

    1. Acne, especially during puberty is caused by hormonal changes. So, you have to concentrate on balancing your hormones with proper nutrition and hygiene. Avoid eating junk and oily food. Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins and stay hydrated. Apart from that try topical home remedies to treat the present breakouts.

    1. It depends on the person’s skin type and healing capacity. So, try the process regularly until you achieve the results. Apart from that, exfoliate regularly, avoid oily foods and eat nutritional food.

  1. When we use a lemon for the process, Do I use a whole lemon or half of it? Also, will it burn a bit? Another question is that can I use cinnamon powder and lemon for the process?
