Some symptoms are: dry mouth, bleeding in the gums, respiratory tract infections, poor dental hygiene and infections in your mouth.

Bad breath is a simple and common problem but not a disease and can be prevented easily by following these simple home remedies.

Home Remedies for Bad Breath:

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda balances pH level in mouth and makes it hard for bacteria to fester. It also removes strains on teeth. However it is also corrosive on the teeth. So make sure that don’t use it too often.

Process – 1:

  • Brush your teeth normally and rinse.
  • Now brush your teeth with a little baking soda.
  • Thoroughly wash your mouth and repeat regularly.
  • Or you can simply use the toothpaste which contains baking soda as an ingredient. You can use baking soda alone as a tooth powder to brush.

Process – 2:

  • Mix a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water to dissolve completely.
  • Use this solution to gargle several times in a day.
  • Repeat regularly.

2. Fennel

Fennel acts as natural anti-microbial and other properties which prevents bad breath. Fennl seeds helps to resolve digestive problems, which is one of the main causes for bad breath. It also provides fresh aromatic scent.

Process – 1:

  • Chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds after eating food with strong odors.
  • It freshen breath and stimulates saliva production in mouth.
  • Mix this with other aromatic spices like cardamom, cloves, etc. for effective results.
  • Do this regularly.

Process – 2:

  • Crush a teaspoon of fennel seeds.
  • Add a cup of boiling water and steep for 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Strain the tea and drink it by adding honey or milk or any sweetener as per your preferences.
  • Drink this regularly.

3. Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains cinnamic aldehyde which cures bad breath and reduces the bacteria in saliva.

Process – 1:

  • Add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder to a cup of water.
  • Boil this for about 5 – 10 minutes.
  • You can also add some bay leaves and cardamom.
  • Strain the solution and use to rinse the mouth.
  • Repeat twice a day to get rid of bad breath.

Process – 2:

Honey has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which kill the bacteria and lemon has strong refreshing citrus property which reduces the bad breath problem.

  • Add half teaspoon of cinnamon, juice of 2 lemons, 1 ½ teaspoon of honey and a cup of warm water to a bottle which has tight fitting lid.
  • Shake well and keep aside for few hours.
  • Use 2 tablespoons to gargle for a minute.
  • Repeat regularly.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar has acidic and antiseptic properties which breakdown plaque and fight against the bacteria causes bad breath.

Process:

  • Stir a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.
  • Drink this liquid before eating your meals.
  • Follow this regularly.
  • Or Drink a tablespoon of diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV) after each meal.
  • Or Stir in a teaspoon of ACV in a cup of warm water and gargle).

5. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has natural anti fungal and antiseptic properties which kill the fungi and bacteria that feed on leftover food particles in your mouth.

Process:

  • Mix equal parts of tea tree oil, lemon oil and peppermint oil in a glass of water.
  • Use it as a mouthwash to get rid of the bad breath regularly.
  • Or Use toothpaste which has tea tree oil.
  • Or Add few drops of tea tree oil to your toothpaste.
  • Or Use an oral cleansing product that contains tea tree.

6. Parsley

Parsley kills the bacteria with its chlorophyll (anti-bacterial property). It also helps to stimulate the saliva flow.

Process – 1:

  • Dip a handful of fresh parsley leaves in vinegar.
  • Chew them thoroughly for a minute or two.
  • Repeat this regularly to get rid of bad breath.

Process – 2:

  • Juice a few fresh parsley leaves with a juicer.
  • Sip the juice to get instant freshness.

Process – 3:

  • Mix 2 cups of water with a few springs of chopped parsley.
  • Boil it for few minutes by adding a few whole cloves.
  • Turn off the heat and allow it to cool.
  • Strain and use this liquid as mouthwash.
  • Gargle with this liquid regularly after taking each meal.

7. Fenugreek

Fenugreek increases the production of saliva in your mouth.

Process:

  • Boil a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water.
  • Allow it to simmer for about 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Strain and drink regularly.

8. Tea

Tea, either green or black, helps to prevent bad breath. Black tea controls the plaque, bacteria and prevents bad breath. Green tea has antibacterial compounds that fight against the germs and polyphenol in green tea prevents foul odor formation from bacterial growth.

Process:

  • Steep a tea bag in a cup of hot water for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the tea bag and drink this tea regularly.
  • Or make herbal tea by adding two teaspoons of dried alfalfa leaves in a cup of boiling water.
  • Steep it for about 15 minutes, strain, and drink.
  • Drink 3 times a day.

9. Cloves

Clove contains oils that have anti-microbial effects and antiseptic properties which help to get rid of the bad breath.

Process:

  • Chew a few pieces of clove after meals will help to get complete relief from the bad breath.
  • Or Boil 2 cups of water and add 4 cloves.
  • Let it steep for 20 minutes and stir occasionally.
  • Strain the tea and drink regularly.
  • You can use this as mouth wash twice a day.

10. Lemon

Lemons contain high acidic and citrus properties which prevents the growth of bacteria on your tongue and gums.

Process:

  • Mix a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice in a cup of water with a pinch of salt.
  • Use this to rinse your mouth thoroughly before bed.
  • Repeat it regularly to prevent a dry mouth.

11. Water

Water cleans mouth by removing the trapped food particles and bacteria.

Process:

  • Swish a small amount of water around your mouth for at least 20 seconds.
  • This will help to loosen food particles and clean your mouth.
  • It also works as a mouthwash and keeps your mouth fresh,
  • Repeat this daily.

12. Diet Plan

Follow these diet tips to cure bad breath.

  • Avoid foods which are notorious for bad breath, like garlic, onions, sugary foods, fish, poultry, meat, eggs, etc.
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables to cleanse your system.
  • Chew fresh peppermint, spearmint, parsley, basil instead of gum.
  • Eat guava, gooseberry and other rough food like bread which will helps in cleaning your mouth and throat. After taking this food, drink plenty of water.
  • Cheese fights against plaque and mouth odor, so snack on this.

Tips to Reduce Bad Breath:

In addition to home remedies, follow these tips for effective results and to prevent bad breath completely.

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day, and also floss, also brush your tongue.
  • Do not wear dentures overnight and clean them thoroughly after every use.
  • Suck sugarless mints which will stimulate saliva production.
  • Don’t skip your meals as it helps the bacteria growth.
  • Quit smoking and other tobacco products as this will increases the risk of getting gum diseases.
  • Check out the food which causes bad breath and try to avoid them.
  • Try some stress relief activities like yoga, meditation, deep breathes, etc.
  • Visit dentist at least once a year.
