Home Remedies for Dark Circles:

Choose any method as per your preference and try it regularly to achieve the desired results. Remember that, home remedies take some time to show the results. Meanwhile, if you want to mask up the dark tint, then you can use under-eye concealers for the same.

1. Rose Water

Rose water contains properties which have a soothing effect and lighten dark circles. It has antioxidants strengthen skin cells, regenerate tissue, and rejuvenate skin. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that protect your eye from contaminations, redness, dust, itchiness, and inflammation.

Process – 1:

  • Soak a few drops of rose water on two cotton pads for 2 – 3 minutes.
  • Apply to the affected area for 15 minutes.
  • Repeat twice daily until results are visible.

Process – 2:

  • Combine rosewater and cold milk in a bowl.
  • Soak two cotton pads in this mixture for 2 – 3 minutes.
  • Apply to the affected area for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

2. Cucumber

Cucumber has a cooling affect which lightens the skin. It also contains various antioxidants like orientin, cucurbitacins, isoscoparin, vitexin, and vitamins C and K which reduce pain and inflammation that causes puffiness and dark circles. Process – 1:

  • Cut a cucumber into thick slices and place in refrigerator for 30 minutes to cool.
  • Place cold slices on the affected area and leave for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.

  • Combine equal parts lemon juice and cucumber juice.
  • Apply to the affected area with a cotton ball.

3. Almond Oil

Almond oil lightens and moisturizes skin. It has a rich amount of vitamin K and other antioxidants which relieves puffy eyes and contracts dilated blood vessels.

Process – 1:

  • Apply a small amount of almond oil to the affected area and gently massage for 3 – 4 minutes.
  • Leave overnight and rinse with water the next morning.
  • Repeat daily until results are visible.

  • Combine 5 – 6 drops of almond oil and 1 tablespoon of raw honey in a bowl.
  • Apply to the affected area before going to sleep.

4. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice contains vitamin C and bleaching properties which remove dark circles.

Process – 1:

  • Use a cotton ball to apply a few drops of lemon juice to the affected area.
  • Leave for 10 – 15 minutes and rinse with water.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

Process – 2:

  • Combine a tablespoon of lemon juice, 2 – 3 tablespoons of tomato puree, and a pinch of flour and turmeric powder to make a thick paste.
  • Apply to the affected area.
  • Leave for 10 – 15 minutes and rinse with water.
  • Repeat three times weekly until results are visible.

5. Raw Potato

Potatoes are natural bleaching agents which lighten dark circles and prevent puffiness.

Process – 1:

  • Grate 1 – 2 chilled potatoes to extract its juice.
  • Use a cotton ball to apply the juice to the affected area.
  • Leave for 10 – 15 minutes and rinse with cool water.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.
  • Note: Alternately place thick potato slices on the affected areas for 12 – 15 minutes.

Process – 2: (Cool Poultice)

  • Grate a frozen potato and gather in a cloth.
  • Place on the affected area for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

Process – 3:

  • Peel a potato and half a cucumber, cut into pieces, and blend.
  • Strain the juice and place in refrigerator until cold.
  • Soak two cotton pads in this mixture for 1 – 2 minutes.
  • Apply to the affected area for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

6. Turmeric

Turmeric contains curcumin which has anti-aging, antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflammation and clear pigmentation and other flaws.

Process:

  • Mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder and pineapple juice to make a paste.
  • Apply to the affected area and leave for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat daily until results are visible.

7. Tomatoes

Tomatoes lighten skin and remove dark circles.

Process – 1:

  • Combine equal quantities of tomato juice and lemon juice.
  • Use a cotton ball to apply the juice to the affected area.
  • Leave for 10 minutes and rinse with water.
  • Repeat daily until results are visible.

Process – 2:

  • Add mint leaves, a teaspoon of lemon juice, and a pinch of salt to tomato juice.

8. Apple

Apples contain tannic acid which lightens skin and contains vitamins B and C and potassium which nourishes skin.

Process – 1:

  • Cut a ripe apple into thick pieces.
  • Apply to the affected area for 30 minutes and rinse with cold water.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

Process – 2:

  • Boil a green apple until the top layer becomes soft.
  • Apply to the affected area for 30 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

9. Cold Compress

Cold compresses constrict blood vessels reducing dark circles and puffiness.

Process – 1:

  • Soak a clean wash cloth in cold water or milk for 2 – 3 minutes.
  • Wring the cloth and apply directly to affected area.
  • Leave for 3 – 5 minutes.
  • Repeat 2 – 3 times until results are visible.

Process – 2:

  • Choose either a bag of frozen peas, chilled teabags, a cool metal spoon, or to wrap 2 – 4 ice cubes in a soft napkin or wash cloth.
  • Apply to the affected area.
  • Repeat 3 – 4 times daily until results are visible.

10. Mint Leaves

Mint leaves have a cooling effect and contains antibacterial, anti-microbial, and antiseptic properties that constrict blood vessels and clear dark circles.

Process – 1:

  • Apply crushed mint leaves to the affected area.
  • Leave for 5 – 10 minutes and wipe with clean cloth.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

  • Crush fresh mint leaves and a tablespoon of tomato juice to make a paste.

11. Orange Juice and Glycerin

Orange juice mixed with glycerin removes dark circles and leaves skin smooth and soft.

Process:

  • Mix fresh orange juice and a small amount of glycerin.
  • Use a cotton ball to apply the juice to the affected area.
  • Leave for 2 – 3 minutes and rinse with water.

12. Tea Bags

Tea bags contain caffeine and antioxidants that rid dark circles and puffiness, shrinks blood vessels, and reduces fluid retention. Tea has tannins that reduce swelling and discoloration.

Process:

  • Place 2 used black or green teabags in refrigerator for 30 – 40 minutes.
  • Apply the chilled teabags to the affected area
  • Leave for 10 – 15 minutes and rinse with water.

13. Milk

Milk contains lactic acid, amino acids, proteins, antioxidants, and enzymes which moisturizes and softens skin while reducing puffiness.

Process:

  • Apply cold milk-soaked cotton balls to the affected area and leave for 5 – 7 minutes.
  • Repeat 3 – 4 times daily until results are visible.

14. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil moisturizes skin and absorbs oil.

Process:

  • Apply coconut oil to the affected area and gently massage for 2 – 3 minutes before going to sleep.

15. Fenugreek Seeds

  • Soak 2 teaspoons of fenugreek seeds in water for 3 – 5 hours.
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of milk and grind into a paste.

16. Buttermilk

 20. Night Jasmine

Night jasmine has ophthalmic, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties that cure eye diseases and dark circles caused by stress.

Process:

  • Mix 2 drops of jasmine essential oil and 2 tablespoons of either olive, almond, or vegetable oil.
  • Apply to the affected area and gently massage for 3 – 4 minutes.
  • Leave for 20 – 30 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

 21. Arnica

Arnica is used for treating bruises, swelling, and strained muscles. Always dilute arnica oil with either olive, almond, or vegetable oil to avoid toxic side effects.

Process:

  • Combine 2 – 3 drops of arnica oil and either olive, almond, or vegetable oil.
  • Apply to the affected area and leave for 3 – 4 minutes.
  • Rinse with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

 22. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel contains catechins, tannin, proanthocyanins, gallic acid, flavonoids, essential oils, saponins, and choline.

Process:

  • Soak two cotton pads in witch hazel.
  • Apply to the affected area for 5 – 10 minutes and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly until results are visible.

23. Nutmeg and Milk

Nutmeg has antioxidants that contain skin-lightening properties.

Process:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of nutmeg powder and milk to make a paste.
  • Apply to the affected area.
  • Leave for 20 – 25 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat 3 – 4 times weekly until results are visible.

24. Additional Applications for Dark Circles:

Try using some of these items to lighten dark circles.

  • Vitamin E oil
  • OTC cream
  • Cream containing almond
  • Sunscreen

Tips:

  1. Use two chilled metal spoons on the affected area for cooling effect.
  2. Sleep 7 – 8 nightly to reduce dark circles and for better health.
  3. Exercise daily using yoga, meditation, and deep breathing for proper blood circulation, better sleep, and reduced stress.
  4. Avoid facial masks under and around your eyes.
  5. Regularly wash your eyes with warm water followed with cold water to improve blood circulation and cleanse any dirt particles.
  6. Apply moisturizer before bed for added hydration.
  7. Sinus infections also cause dark circles. Use a neti-pot with saline solution for relief.
  8. Drink 8 – 10 cups of water daily to avoid dehydration.
  9. Eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, yogurt, sprouts, salads, skimmed milk, paneer, unprocessed cereals, lentils and beans to avoid nutritional deficiency.
  10. Reduce salt.
  11. Quit smoking and drinking alcohol.

    1. It is difficult to tell the exact time frame as everyone is different. So try the remedies regularly with patience. Apart from that, consider following the below tips.

      – Don’t rub the skin under the eyes.
      – Sleep for 7 – 8 hours a day.
      – Exercise regularly.
      – Remove make up before going to bed.
      – Drink plenty of water and reduce salt content in your diet.
