Everyone wants a flawless complexion, but damage from sun, stress, and makeup can leave skin looking patchy and uneven. Commercial skin brightening creams are expensive and ineffective, but there are numerous natural methods you can use at home to get a fairer, more youthful complexion.

These methods are safe, healthy, effective, and inexpensive, but they require patience and persistence. If you’re ready for brighter, younger-looking skin, try them all out until you find the one that works best for you.

Home Remedies for Fair Skin:

1. Turmeric

Turmeric is an herb with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-aging properties. It helps to purify the blood, lighten pigmentation, and heal acne and acne scars, giving your skin a healthy, radiant glow. Use turmeric to spice up your cooking, and try out the methods below.

Method 1: Turmeric Mask

  • In a bowl, mix 1 teaspoon turmeric powder with 3 teaspoons fresh lemon juice.
  • Apply the paste to skin and leave on 20-25 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Follow regularly.
  • Note: this mixture stains clothing.

Method 2: Turmeric Scrub

This homemade scrub exfoliate the skin and gives fair skin.

  • In a bowl, mix 1 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon gram flour, and 1 tablespoon fresh cream.
  • Apply it on face and other areas.
  • Massage the resulting paste into skin for 10-15 minutes to exfoliate.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Note: If you have oily skin use milk instead of fresh cream. 

Method 3: Turmeric with Sunflower Seeds

  • Soak 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds in ½ cup milk overnight.
  • In the morning, grind the seeds into a paste.
  • Mix in ½ teaspoon turmeric powder and a pinch of saffron.
  • Apply the paste to skin.
  • Leave on 15-20 minutes, then rinse with water.
  • Repeat regularly.

Method 4: Turmeric, Rice Powder, and Tomato Juice

  • In a bowl, mix 1 teaspoon turmeric, 2 tablespoons rice powder, 2 tablespoons tomato juice, and enough milk to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 30-45 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat regularly to get rid of the dark skin tone and to get fair skin.

Method 5: Turmeric with Olive Oil

  • Mix turmeric powder with olive oil to make a paste.
  • Spread over skin in a thin layer.
  • Leave on 20-30 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
  • Repeat regularly to lighten the skin tone.

Method 6: Turmeric and Oatmeal

  • In a bowl, mix ½ teaspoon turmeric, 2 teaspoons oatmeal, and a few drops of lemon juice.
  • Apply the resulting paste to skin and let it dry.
  • Wash off with water, scrubbing in circular motions to exfoliate skin.
  • Repeat regularly.

2. Milk

Milk contains alpha–hydroxy acids that exfoliate the skin to clear away dead cells, dirt, and other impurities. Drink milk every day and use the topical methods described below to soothe and brighten skin. Use low-fat milk for oily skin and heavy cream for dry skin.

Method 1: Milk and Honey

  • Mix equal quantities milk and honey.
  • Apply this on face and neck.
  • Massage into skin and leave on 15-20 minutes.
  • Rinse with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly.
  • Note: Use low fat milk for oily skin and full cream milk for dry skin.

Method 2: Milk and Coconut

  • Mix 1 cup warm milk with 1 tablespoon shredded coconut, 1 tablespoon rice flour, and 1 teaspoon baking soda.
  • Massage into skin, then rinse with water.
  • Repeat twice a month.

Method 3: Milk and Oatmeal

  • Mix whole milk and ground oatmeal to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 20-30 minutes.
  • Rinse with water by rubbing in circular motions.
  • Repeat regularly.

Method 4: Milk and Rice

  • Soak 1 cup rice overnight and grind it into a paste in the morning.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons each of raw milk and rice, add 1 teaspoon lemon juice to make a creamy paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave for few minutes.
  • Scrub the face and then rinse with water.

3. Almond and Almond Oil

Almonds contain vitamin E, omega–3 fatty acids, calcium, protein, and magnesium. The antioxidants in almonds cleanse the skin and eliminate toxins and free radicals. Eat almonds daily and use the topical almond oil treatments described below for healthy, beautiful skin.

Method 1: Almond Oil Massage

Hot oil body massage increases the blood circulation, relaxes the body and gives instant glow by reducing the tan.

  • Crush neem and basil leaves to make a fine paste.
  • Mix in almond oil.
  • Stir well and heat the mixture until it’s warm to the touch.
  • Mix in a pinch of saffron.
  • Massage this warm almond oil into skin and leave on 30-60 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Repeat daily before taking bath to get fair skin.
  • Note: almond oil can be replaced with coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil.

Method 2: Almond Oil, Lemon Juice and Powdered Milk

  • Mix 1 teaspoon each of almond oil, lemon juice, and powdered milk to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on until dry.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Repeat regularly.

Method 3: Almond Oil and Sandalwood

  • Mix almond oil with sandalwood paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 25 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Repeat regularly to get soft, smooth and fair skin.

Method 4: Almond Oil and Black Gram

  • Soak 4 almonds and 1 tablespoon black gram in 1 cup milk overnight.
  • In the morning, grind them to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 30 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Repeat regularly.

4. Fruit Pack

Fruits like mango, papaya, avocado, and cucumber give fair skin tone if we use regularly by clearing the skin pores internally and protecting skin from outside dust and impurities.

This fruit pack will clear toxins and impurities from your skin and leave it healthy and bright.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon avocado
  • 1 tablespoon papaya
  • 1 tablespoon cucumber
  • 2 teaspoons fresh cream or  Fuller’s Earth(for oily skin)

Process:

  • Put all ingredients into a blender to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat regularly for few weeks to get fair skin.

5. Lemon

Lemon has natural bleaching properties. When applied regularly, it reduces the appearance of blemishes and dark spots. It may cause irritation and itching. Avoid over-exposure to the sun after using lemon juice.

Method 1: Lemon and Water

  • Mix equal quantities lemon juice and water.
  • Use a cotton ball to apply it to skin.
  • Leave on 10-15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
  • Note: Do not apply to cuts and wounds.
  • Note: Use more water for sensitive skin.

Method 2: Lemon, Honey, and Oatmeal

Oatmeal exfoliates top layer of the skin and clears the dead skin on the face.

  • Mix honey, lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon oatmeal to make a paste.
  • Apply this on the face and other body where you want to get fair skin.
  • Massage into skin using circular motions.
  • Leave on 20 minutes, then rinse with water.
  • Note: if you have extremely dry skin, replace lemon juice with cucumber juice.
  • Repeat regularly.

Note: Generally people with sensitive skin should avoid applying lemon juice as it can cause irritation and burning sensation. If you have sensitive skin, but want to avail lemon benefits without the side effects then you can try vitamin C serums to achieve the same.

6. Gram Flour

Gram flour or chickpea powder or and besan is an excellent exfoliate. It clears away dead skin cells and other impurities, leaving your skin radiant.

Method 1: Gram Flour Mask

  • Mix 2 tablespoons of gram flour with milk to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin, rubbing in upward motions.
  • Allow paste to dry, then rinse with water.
  • Note: for dry skin, add ¼ tablespoon fresh cream.
  • Note: for better results, add a tablespoon of lemon juice or ½ tablespoon of

Method 2: Gram Flour, Turmeric, and Rosewater

  • In a bowl, mix 2 teaspoons gram flour, 1 teaspoon turmeric powder, and enough rosewater to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 5 minutes.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Don’t use soap right after using this treatment.
  • Repeat regularly, preferably before showering.

7. Yogurt

Yogurt contains lactic acid that exfoliates skin to give it a healthy glow. It also has B vitamins and calcium that help to regenerate new cells.

Method 1: Yogurt and Honey

  • Mix 2 teaspoons of plain yogurt with 1 teaspoon of raw honey to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 15-20 minutes or until it dries.
  • Rinse with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly for glowing skin.
  • Note: honey can be replaced by tomato pulp or juice.
  • Note: you can also apply plain yogurt.

Method 2: Yogurt, Sugar, and Oatmeal

  • Mix plain yogurt with ground oatmeal to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 15-20 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water, massaging in circular motions.
  • Repeat regularly to get even skin tone.

8. Banana

Banana is rich in vitamins A, B, and E, and it has anti-aging properties. It eliminates marks, scars, and wrinkles to give skin an even tone.

Method 1: Banana and Honey

  • Blend banana and honey to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 15-20 minutes or until dry.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
  • Repeat once every 2 days.

Method 2: Banana and Guava

  • Blend banana and guava to make a paste.
  • Apply this paste on skin.
  • Leave on 15-20 minutes, then rinse with water.
  • Repeat regularly.

9. Papaya

Papaya contains an enzyme called papain, which exfoliates, promotes skin renewal, and makes the skin brighter and fairer. Papaya also contains loads of anti-oxidants and vitamins A, E, and C.

Method 1: Papaya and Honey

  • Mix 2 tablespoons mashed papaya with 1 tablespoon honey.
  • Stir well and apply to skin and leave on 15-20 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
  • Repeat regularly to lighten skin tone.
  • Note: Papaya can be used alone.

Method 2: Green Papaya

  • Peel a papaya, cut it into chunks, and put the chunks in a blender until smooth.
  • Apply to skin, leave on 20-30 minutes, and rinse with water.
  • Note: green papaya has a higher concentration of the papain enzyme.
  • Repeat regularly.

10. Egg Pack

Eggs are loaded with protein, and they help to nourish and tighten the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines. Egg also removes oil, dead skin cells, and other impurities to brighten and even out skin tone.

Method:

  • Beat one egg.
  • Apply egg to skin and let dry.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 2 drops lavender or tea tree oil with cool water.
  • Use this mixture to rinse away egg mask.
  • Lemon juice bleaches skin, and lavender and tea tree oil add radiance.
  • Note: do not apply egg to broken skin and avoid contact with eyes.

11. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera contains a compound called anthraquinone, which lightens skin by removing the top layer of skin cells. It also soothes and heals skin to even out tone.

Method:

  • Apply organic aloe vera gel to the skin.
  • Leave on 20 – 30 minutes and wash with water.
  • You can also rinse it off after 30 minutes if you choose.
  • Repeat regularly to get rid of the dark colored skin
  • Note: You can leave on gel without rinsing as it is not oily once it dries.

12. Tomato

The lycopene in tomatoes helps to lighten skin tone and give it a natural glow. It also reduces tan and removes dead skin cells on the face.

Method:

  • Put 2 tomatoes, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon gram flour in a blender.
  • Blend until smooth, then apply to skin.
  • Leave on 20-30 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
  • Repeat daily.
  • Note: add water for sensitive skin, and wash off immediately if you feel burning, itching, or stinging.

13. Cumin Seeds

Cumin seeds contain calcium, potassium, copper, selenium, manganese, vitamin A, C, and E, anti-oxidants and anti-aging properties. It fight against the free radicals and gives natural glow.

Method:

  • Boil 1 teaspoon cumin seeds for 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat, let cool until warm to the touch.
  • Use as a rinse.
  • Repeat daily.

14. Rosewater

Rose water contains tons of anti-oxidants and vitamins that nourish and heal skin. Add it to your homemade scrubs and masks to clear and rejuvenate skin. Do not use regular soap in combination with rosewater. It is good for sensitive and oily skin. You can wash face with rosewater to get to improve the skin tone.

Method:

  • Mix 2 tablespoons rosewater, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon gram flour and 2 tablespoons milk to make a paste.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 20-30 minutes or until dry.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Repeat daily.
  • Note: Don’t use any soap to wash the face

15. Avocado and Carrot

Avocado is rich in vitamin E, which nourishes skin, clears away dead skin cells, and evens skin tone. Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which makes the skin healthy and glow. This process fades dark spots and acne scars to give skin a youthful glow.

Ingredients:

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 carrot
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 egg
  • Honey
  • Cool water

Method:

  • Chop your carrot and boil it for 10 minutes.
  • Place avocado and cooked carrot into a blender.
  • Add heavy cream, egg, and honey and blend until smooth.
  • Apply to skin and leave on 15-20 minutes.
  • Rinse with cool water.
  • Repeat regularly.

16. Herbal Steam

Steam opens the pores and removes dead skin cells, dirt, oil and other impurities.

Method:

  • Add chamomile, lavender, and mint leaves to boiling water.
  • Drape a towel over your head and lean over the pan.
  • Allow steam to wash over your skin for a few minutes.
  • Rub ice cubes over skin to close pores.
  • Repeat regularly.

17. Fuller’s Earth

Fuller’s earth or multani mitti, removes excess oil from skin. It contains lime, alumina, iron oxide, and bentonite and montmorillonite minerals that give skin a healthy glow.

18. Sun Protection

Over-exposure to sun leads to unwanted dark spots, blemishes, and patchy skin tone. If you spend a lot of time outside, wear hats, long sleeves, and long pants, and apply a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 to protect skin from harmful UV rays.

19. Exfoliation

Manual exfoliation clears away dead skin cells, dirt, oil, and other toxins. This helps to brighten and even out skin tone. Try the following methods.

  • Use exfoliating cleansers.
  • Make your own exfoliation by adding teaspoon of ground almonds or oatmeal to your regular cleanser. Use this for scrubbing.
  • Use a scrub brush or a dry brush to exfoliate the entire body and use soft-bristled brush to wash your face.

20. Skin-friendly Foods

Healthy diet and regular exercise gives healthy and glowing skin. Add these foods in your diet to get healthy and glowing skin.

  • Eat tomatoes 3 to 5 times a week. The lycopene protects against UV rays and helps combat acne and fade scars and dark spots. The anti-oxidants in tomatoes block damaging free radicals.
  • Drink green tea regularly. It suppresses dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that causes acne, and it contains anti–oxidants that keep skin healthy.
  • Eat foods rich in anti-oxidants, like blueberries, cherries, and blackberries, to fight acne.
  • Eat foods rich in vitamin C, like strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries to prevent inflammation.
  • Eat fish regularly to get your omega–3 fatty acids. These suppress the secretion of the inflammatory chemicals and slow the skin’s aging process.
  • Brown rice contains ceramides, the lipid molecules that maintain skin’s moisture balance.
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. All of the fruits and herbs used in the topical methods listed above should be included in your diet.
  • Eat plenty of almonds.
  • Cucumber cleanses the dirt and darkness on the skin. It soothes the skin p and reduces the tan with its cooling effect. Include cucumber in your diet like salads or juice. You can also apply this on the skin where you want fair skin tone like fair, neck, hands, legs, etc.

Other Tips for Brighter Skin

  • Drink coconut water to get fair skin. You can also apply this twice a day and leave for 15 minutes, then wash it off with normal water.
  • Drink plenty of water and citrus fruit juice to get fair and healthy skin.
  • Milk contains vitamins which are very essential for. Drink 2-3 glasses of milk daily (soy milk if you’re lactose intolerant).
  • Do not use household bleach on skin.
  • Consult a doctor before using any skin lightening products.
  • Have patience, and remember that the above remedies brighten and even skin tone. They will not drastically change the color of your skin.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Use makeup sparingly.
  • Use sunblock with zinc oxide or titanium oxide.
  • Get 7-9 hours of sleep every night.

    1. Combine olive – lemon juice or tomato juice or diluted baking soda. Apply any mixture on the dark discoloured area and gently massage for few minutes. Leave it on for another few minutes and rinse off with water. Repeat once in 2 days.
