Home Remedies For Sun Tan
During summers, we all love to hang out at the beaches with friends and family. No matter how much sunscreen lotions we apply, sometimes we end up tanned. The sun’s UV rays increase the melanin production which results in a dark skin tone.

There are many commercial products that claim to lighten the skin tone but unfortunately, they contain chemicals that aren’t safe for our skin. So, we have come up with some excellent home remedies to reduce the dark pigmentation caused by sun and increase skin’s immunity.

How to Get Rid of Sun Tan with Home Remedies?

Here is an assortment of various home remedies which are helpful for removing sun tan. Choose any one remedy and try it regularly with some patience to achieve the results.

1. Sandalwood

Sandalwood contains anti-inflammatory properties, astringent, skin lightening and anti-aging properties. They also help you maintain glowing and radiant complexion.

  • Combine equal amounts of sandalwood powder and pure turmeric powder.
  • Add enough amount of rosewater into it to make a thick paste.
  • Apply the paste on the affected areas.
  • Leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse off with cold water.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a week.
  • Alternatively, you can use coconut water instead of rosewater.

Alternative Method: Combine enough amounts of sandalwood powder, coconut oil and almond oil to make a paste. Apply and leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water.

2. Rice Flour

Rice flour has skin lightening, anti-aging and exfoliating properties. It softens and soothes any discomforts caused by sun tan.

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of rice flour, 1 tablespoon of tomato juice, a pinch of turmeric and enough amounts of water/rosewater.
  • Apply the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 10 – 12 minutes.
  • Rinse with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a week.

3. Milk

The lactic acid present in milk is beneficial for reducing the pigmentation caused by the sun. Apart from that, it deeply cleanses the skin and removes the impurities clogging the pores.

  • Take 2 tablespoons of chilled milk.
  • Using a cotton ball, apply milk on the tanned areas.
  • Gently massage in circular motions for few minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process daily.

For added benefits: Add a pinch of turmeric into the milk.

4. Lemon

Lemon contains natural bleaching properties which can lighten the discoloration. It also balances the pH levels of the skin and repairs the damage of the skin cells caused by the sun rays.

  • Rub a lemon slice on the tanned areas.
  • Let the lemon juice dry completely.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 1 – 3 times in a day.

5. Cucumber, Lemon and Rosewater

If direct application of lemon juice is causing irritation, then you can try this process. Cucumber juice soothes the irritation caused by sun rays.

  • Combine 1 tablespoon each of lemon juice, cucumber juice and rosewater.
  • Using a cotton ball, apply the solution on the tanned areas.
  • Leave the application to dry completely.
  • Repeat the process once in a day.

6. Gram Flour or Chickpea Flour

Gram flour has excellent exfoliating properties which removes dead skin cells and other impurities from the skin pores. It also helps to lighten the discoloration caused by suntan.

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of Bengal gram flour, a pinch of turmeric, 1 tablespoon each of milk and rosewater.
  • Mix well and apply the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes.
  • Wet your fingers and gently scrub off the application.
  • Wash the areas with cold water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 3 times in a week.

For added benefits: Add 1 tablespoon of orange peel powder.

7. Red Lentil, Tomato and Aloe Pack

The coarse nature of red lentil exfoliates the dead skin cells and other impurities clogging the pores. The skin lightening properties of tomato reduce the dark discoloration. Aloe vera soothes the irritation caused by the sun’s rays.

  • Combine 1 tablespoon each of red lentil powder, tomato juice and aloe vera extract.
  • Apply the paste on the tanned areas and leave it on for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse off with cold water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a week.

8. Papaya

The enzymes present in papaya exfoliate, whiten and repair the damage caused by sun tan. Honey locks the moisture in the skin cells and makes it supple.

  • Mash 1/2 papaya into a paste.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of honey into it.
  • Spread a thick layer of the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat the process 3 times in a week.

9. Oatmeal

The gritty nature of the oatmeal exfoliates the skin. Apart from that, it nourishes and lightens the skin complexion.

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of coarsely ground oatmeal and 3 tablespoons of buttermilk.
  • Massage the mixture on the tanned areas for few minutes.
  • Leave it on for another few minutes.
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water followed by cold water.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a week.

10. Yogurt

The lactic acid present in yogurt is helpful in lightening the tan and exfoliating the impurities. It soothes the irritation caused by sun’s harmful rays.

  • Combine 1 tablespoon of yogurt and tomato pulp.
  • Apply the mixture on the affected areas.
  • Leave it on to dry for 30 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process 2 – 3 times in a week.

Alternatively: You can use orange juice or gram flour instead of tomato pulp. Or else just apply yogurt directly on the tanned areas.

11. Strawberries

The gritty nature of strawberries exfoliates the impurities present in the skin. Apart from that, it also lightens and moisturizes the skin.

  • Crush few strawberries into a paste.
  • Combine strawberries paste and 2 tablespoons of milk.
  • Rub the mixture on the tanned areas for few minutes.
  • Leave it on for 30 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a week.

12. Potato

If you have sensitive skin, then this process is excellent for you. Potato contains mild bleaching properties which lighten the discoloration.

  • Extract juice from a potato.
  • Using a cotton ball, apply the juice on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 10 – 12 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process daily to achieve the results.

Note: You can add some lemon juice to potato juice if your skin can handle.

13. Pineapple and Honey

The bromelain present in pineapple exfoliates the dead skin cells and other impurities present in the skin pores. It also helps in reducing the melanin production. When it is mixed with honey, the effectiveness gets doubled.

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of pineapple pulp and 1 tablespoon honey.
  • Apply the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process once in 2 days.

14. Cabbage Leaves

Though this process sounds weird, it is effective in removing the sun tan. It possess anti-inflammatory properties and contains vitamins K, C and A.

  • Take cabbage leaf and place it on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Discards the cabbage leaves.
  • Repeat the process regularly.

15. Bitter Gourd

Bitter gourd is high in antioxidants which provide relief from sun tan and sun burns. It is effective in removing worst cases of sun tan.

  • Extract juice from a bitter gourd.
  • Using a cotton ball, apply the juice on the affected areas.
  • Leave it on for 5 – 7 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a day.

Note: you can store the remaining juice in refrigerator for future use.

16. Multani Mitti or Fuller’s Earth

Multani mitti contains cooling and soothing properties which are effective in reducing the discomforts caused by sun tan. It cleanses the skin and stimulates the blood circulation.

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of multani mitti, 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel and enough amounts of rosewater.
  • Apply the mask on the face and leave it on for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a week.

17. Wheat Flour

Wheat flour lightens the suntan very effectively. The coarse nature of wheat flour exfoliates the accumulated dead skin cells and impurities.

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of wheat flour and enough amounts of water.
  • Apply the paste on the affected areas.
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a week.

18. Saffron and Fresh Cream

This is an Ayurveda remedy for treating sun tan. Fresh cream is effective in removing last blotches of sun tan. Saffron contains skin lightening, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Add a few strands of saffron to 1 tablespoon of fresh milk cream.
  • Leave it on for a minute and mix well.
  • Spread a thick layer of the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process once in 2 days for effective results.

19. Cornmeal

The exfoliating properties of cornmeal remove the accumulated dead skin cells and other impurities present on the skin. It leaves a fresh, glowing and radiant finish to the skin.

  • Combine 1 – 2 tablespoons of cornmeal and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.
  • Massage the mixture on the tanned areas for few minutes.
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse off with cold water.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a week.

20. Almonds

Almonds not only lighten the sun tan but also provide relief from the side effects of sun tan like irritation and burning sensation. Almonds are rich in vitamin E which is helpful in lightening the skin complexion.

  • Blend 4 – 5 almonds and enough amounts of rosewater to make a paste.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice into it and mix well.
  • Apply the mixture on the affected areas.
  • Gently scrub in circular motions for few minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 3 – 4 times in a day.

21. Aloe Vera

The cooling, refreshing and moisturizing properties of aloe vera not only lighten the sun tan but also reduce other discomforts like burning sensation and sunburn.

  • Slit an aloe vera leaf into lengthwise and remove the gel inside it.
  • Apply the gel directly on the affected areas.
  • Leave it on to dry completely.
  • Rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process daily.

Note: you can add lemon juice, tomato juice or yogurt into the aloe vera for added benefits.

22. Tomato

Tomato juice is rich in anti-puffiness and depigmentation properties which are helpful in treating the sun tan.

  • Blend a small potato into pulp.
  • Apply the pulp on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process daily for effective results.

For added benefits: you can add yogurt, aloe vera gel, cucumber juice into the tomato pulp.

23. Raw Papaya

Raw papaya contains exfoliating and skin brightening enzymes which are helpful in lightening the skin tan.

  • Grate or blend a raw papaya.
  • Apply the pulp on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water followed by cold water.
  • Repeat the process once in 2 days.

24.Cucumber

The cooling, soothing, and lightening properties of cucumber remove the sun tan and reduce the irritation and inflammation caused by it.

  • Blend a cucumber to make a pulp.
  • Add some honey into the pulp and mix well.
  • Apply the mixture on the affected areas.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.

25. Coconut Milk

Due to its high fat content, coconut milk is extremely hydrating and moisturizing to the skin. The mild acids present in it slowly remove the tan.

  • Using a cotton ball, apply coconut milk on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process daily.

Caution: Avoid trying this remedy if you are allergic to coconuts.

26. Green Tea

Green tea contains soothing, cooling and rejuvenating properties. The antioxidants present in it helps to remove the tan.

  • Brew some green tea.
  • Using a cotton ball, apply green tea on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it to dry completely and rinse with water.
  • Repeat the process 2 times in a day.

27. Lemon and Sugar

This combination makes an amazing scrub which is effective in removing sun tan. The bleaching properties of lemon lighten the skin. The gritty nature of sugar exfoliates the impurities from the skin.

  • Combine 1 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon sugar.
  • Mix well and apply it on the tanned areas.
  • Gently massage in circular motions for few minutes.
  • Rinse off with cool water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process regularly.

28. Baby Oil

This process is effective for people who have attained tan artificially with creams and sprays. It absorbs the chemicals from the skin layers.

  • Apply liberal amounts of baby oil on the tanned areas.
  • Massage well in circular motions for few minutes.
  • Bath normally with mild soap and water.
  • Repeat the process whenever required.

29. Borax Powder with Glycerin and Rosewater

This process is effective in removing tan from hands, legs and face. Borax powder contains antibacterial properties, glycerin moisturizes the skin and rosewater removes the tan.

  • Combine 3 tablespoons of borax powder, 2 tablespoons of glycerin and 2 cups of rose water.
  • Mix well and apply the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Rinse off with cold water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process daily for 2 weeks.

30. Orange Peel and Milk Mask

Orange peels are rich in vitamin C which fight with free radicals that restrict proper skin cell functioning. Milk exfoliates, lightens and moisturizes the skin.

  • Remove the peel of an orange and dry it under the sun until crisp.
  • Blend the dried orange peels into fine powder.
  • Combine orange peel powder and 1/2 – 1 cup of milk to make a paste.
  • Apply the paste on the affected areas.
  • Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process 3 times in a week.

31. Mint

The astringent properties of mint help to lighten the tan caused by the sun. This process is effective for sun tan on face.

  • Extract juice from few mint leaves.
  • Combine 2 tablespoons of mint juice and 3 tablespoons of chilled yogurt.
  • Apply the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process regularly.

32. Baking Soda

The gritty nature of baking soda exfoliates the impurities from the skin. The bleaching properties of it will lighten the tan.

  • Combine enough amounts of baking soda and water to a loose consistency paste.
  • Apply the paste on the tanned areas.

  • Leave it on for another few minutes and rinse off with water.

33. Egg White and Multani Mitti

This combination is effective in removing suntan, dark spots, skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation.

  • Into a glass bowl, add 2 egg whites, 4 tablespoons of multani mitti and some rosewater.
  • Whisk the ingredients well until they incorporate.
  • Slater a thick layer of the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process regularly to achieve the results.

34. Salt, Sugar and Olive Oil Scrub

If you are busy and don’t have much time to spend on home remedies then this process is apt for you.

  • Combine few drops of olive oil, equal amounts of salt and sugar.
  • Mix well and apply the tanned areas.
  • Gently scrub in circular motions for few minutes.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 2 – 3 times in a week.

35. Vinegar

The acids present in vinegar lighten the tan and restrict the excess melanin production. It also balances the pH levels of the skin. For this process, you can use white vinegar, apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar.

  • Combine equal amounts of vinegar and water.
  • Using a cotton ball, apply the solution on the affected areas.
  • Leave it on for 5 – 10 minutes and rinse off with cold water.

36. Wheat Germ Powder, Carrot and Milk

Wheat germ powder fades the pigmentation and protects the skin from tanning. Carrot and milk helps to repair the skin damage and nourish the skin. This combination restricts the excess production of melanin in the skin.

  • To a blender, add 1/2 cup of diced carrots and enough amounts of milk.
  • Blend the ingredients well to make a thick paste.
  • Add some wheat germ powder into it and mix well.

37. Brown Sugar, Coffee Powder and Organic Coconut Oil

This combination makes an amazing scrub which exfoliates the impurities, dead skin cells and damaged skin cells. They restore the fairness and leave a radiant look.

  • Combine 4 tablespoons of organic coconut oil, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of coffee powder.
  • Wet the tanned area and massage the mixture on it.
  • After few minutes, rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process 2 – 3 times in a week.

38. Masoor Dal and Milk

The coarse nature of masoor dal exfoliates the dead skin cells and other impurities from the skin. Milk cleanses and restores the fairness of the skin.

  • Soak 2 tablespoons of masoor dal in warm milk for 2 hours.
  • Grind them to obtain a smooth consistency.
  • Place the blended mixture in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  • Apply the mixture on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on to dry completely and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process regularly.

39. Marigold Sun Tan Pack

The skin toning and soothing properties of marigold lightens the pigmentation caused by the sun. It leaves a radiant and even skin tone.

  • Remove the petals of a marigold and soak them in 1/4 cup of milk for 15 minutes.
  • Into a blender, add soaked mixture, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric and 2 teaspoons of kaolin powder.
  • Blend them to make a fine paste.
  • Apply the paste on the tanned areas.
  • Leave it on for few minutes and rinse off with water.
  • Repeat the process regularly.

Tips and Precautions:

  • Applying Vicks vapor rub on the tanned areas provides relief from the irritation caused by sun’s rays. It also moisturizes the skin.
  • Rubbing ice cubes will reduce the burning, itchiness and other accompany a sun tan. You can also bath with cold water to reduce the discomforts.
  • Apply sun screen lotion with high SPF to prevent sun tan.
  • Avoid tanning with chemicals continuously as it can cause skin diseases.
  • Cover your face with scarf or hat to prevent sun tan.
  • If none of the methods work, then consult a dermatologist.
  • If you have sun tan with rashes and blisters then contact for immediate medical help.
