How To Use Plain or Greek Yogurt For Yeast Infection(1)

How To Use Plain or Greek Yogurt For Yeast Infection(1)Yeast infection is usually considered as an embarrassing health condition and a lot of women suffering from it hesitate to seek medical attention. Candida Albicans is the main culprit behind a yeast infection. A vagina is a home to many good and bad microbes. Candida is one of bad microbes. When this balance is disrupted, candida overgrows developing a yeast infection.

The factors causing this issue are hormonal imbalance, weak immune system, oral contraceptives and antibiotics. Restoring the amount of friendly bacteria especially lactobacillus acidophilus in the vagina is the perfect solution for yeast infection.

Both Apple cider vinegar and yogurt contain friendly bacteria which helps us deal with the problem. Though apple cider vinegar is highly effective, some people feel scared to use it because of its acidic nature. If you are one of them, then yogurt is an alternative for you.

Is Yogurt Effective in Treating Yeast Infection?

  • Yogurt contains lactobacillus acidophilus which is friendly bacteria usually found in our intestines and vagina. When this bacterium interacts with sugar present in our diet, it generates hydrogen peroxide through a chemical process called fermentation. This hydrogen peroxide kills the yeast infection.
  • The probiotics or the friendly bacteria present in yogurt restore the balance between the good and bacteria in the body.
  • Usually, yeast thrives in a less acidic environment. By balancing the acidic levels yogurt makes it difficult for the yeast to grow or spread.

How to Use Yogurt for Yeast Infection?

There are different ways of using yogurt for yeast infection which include both internal consumption and external application. For your convenience, we have mentioned them below in detailed steps.

1. Yogurt Tampon

Inserting yogurt into the vagina is a pretty messy job, but it is very effective. Are you wondering how to insert yogurt for yeast infection? Follow this easy process:

  • Add unsweetened yogurt into a plastic tampon.
  • Refrigerate it to get little yogurt sicles.
  • Insert these popsicles into the vagina for 2 hours.
  • Additionally, apply some yogurt to the labia and vaginal opening.
  • Put on a pad to collect the melting yogurt and find relief from the cold yogurt.
  • Rinse off with water and dry thoroughly.
  • Repeat the process once during day and another overnight.
  • Alternatively, coat a tampon with yogurt and insert it into vagina and leave it for about 4 – 6 hours or overnight.

Alternative: If you don’t have a plastic tampon then you can use a disposable glove. Fill the glove fingers with yogurt and freeze them. Take out as needed and insert into the vagina.

2. Yogurt Sicles

The cool temperature of the sicles will reduce the inflammation and swelling.

  • Take a cup of yogurt and fill the slots of an ice cube tray.
  • Place the ice tray in the refrigerator and let it freeze for 3 – 4 hours.
  • Remove the yogurt sicles from the ice cube tray.
  • Gently rub them on the affected areas.
  • After finishing it, rinse off with lukewarm water and pat it dry thoroughly.
  • Repeat the process at least 2 times a day for quick results.

This process is very simple and doesn’t need any earlier preparations.

  • Take some yogurt in a bowl.
  • Using your fingers, apply a coat of yogurt to the affected areas.
  • Leave the application for 30 minutes and wipe off it.
  • Repeat the process at least 3 times a day for 1 week to notice the results.

4. Yogurt Using a Syringe

For this method, you will need a syringe without a needle. By following this process, we apply the yogurt inside the vagina without much discomfort.

  • Take syringe without a needle and fill it with yogurt.
  • Sit with your legs wide spread apart.
  • Place the business end of the syringe into the vagina mouth.
  • Squirt the yogurt inside.
  • Leave it for some time. Make sure to wear a sanitary pad to collect the leaking yogurt.
  • Rinse it off with water.
  • Repeat the application only when you need it.

5. Yogurt Consumption

  • Simply consuming an increased amount of yogurt can help to fight yeast infection from the inside.
  • Consume 1 cup of yogurt 2 times a day i.e., once in the morning and again at night.
  • If you don’t like consuming yogurt, you can take probiotic supplements for achieving the same benefits. Probiotic supplements contain good bacterial strains which help to control and prevent the growth of infection.

6. Garlic and Yogurt

The allicin present in garlic contains antifungal properties which deal with the yeast infection. Apart from that, it boosts your immune system to fight off the infection and prevent its recurrence.

  • Peel 2 – 3 cloves of garlic and mince it to make a paste.
  • Stir in garlic paste to a cup of yogurt and consume it.
  • Eat garlic yogurt at least 2 times a day.

7. Yogurt and Onion

Onion is rich in powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which help to treat the infection. A large number of yeast patients suffer from water retention as well. Onion helps to remove the excess fluids from the body.

  • Take 1/2 onion and grind it.
  • Add onion paste to a cup of yogurt (unsweetened) and consume it.
  • Eat yogurt and onion mixture daily 2 times a day.

8. Yogurt and Ginger

Ginger exhibits a detoxifying effect on the body. It also helps in improving blood circulation and strengthening the immune system to fight off the yeast causing infection. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger soothe the inflammation caused by the infection.

  • Using a grater, grate a 1-inch ginger.
  • Stir in the grated ginger into a cup of yogurt and consume it.
  • Consume this twice a day daily and you will observe results in few days.

9. Yogurt and Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are loaded with amazing benefits. They are rich in omega-3 which is known for its antiviral, antifungal and anti-parasitic properties. Apart from killing the yeast fungus, it also provides relief from the inflammation caused by infection.

  • Add 10gms of pumpkin seeds to a cup of yogurt.
  • Repeat this remedy at least 2 times a day to get relief from the infection quickly.

10. Yogurt and Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is well known for strengthening the immune system and eliminating toxins that include candida. Fatigue, caused by yeast infection can also be treated using cayenne pepper. When cayenne pepper is combined with yogurt, it reduces the yeast infection in a matter of few days.

  • To a cup of yogurt (unsweetened), stir in 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
  • Repeat this remedy at least 2 times a day.

What Kind of Yogurt is Good for Yeast Infection?

In order to treat a yeast infection, you can either use store-bought or homemade yogurt. However, if you are buying it from a store then make sure it is unsweetened, unflavoured and it should contain live active Lactobacilli (more than one species is good).

Flavored contains added sugars which encourage the yeast to grow. Thus, if flavored or sweetened yogurt is used then the situation can worsen.

Homemade Yogurt Recipe:

Making yogurt at home is very simple. By following the below steps you can make about 2 quarts of yogurt.

Things you need…

Ingredients:

  • Organic, whole milk
  • 1 yogurt starter kit
  • wooden spoon
  • Instant-read or candy thermometer (one that can clip to the side of the pan)
  • Whisk

Equipment

  • heavy saucepan with a lid
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • Instant-read or candy thermometer (one that can clip to the side of the pan)
  • Sterilized glass jars

 Process:

  1. Heating the Milk: Pour the milk into a saucepan and warm it until it reaches right below boiling point (about 185°F). Stir the milk gently while heating to make sure the bottom doesn’t scorch and milk doesn’t boil over.
  2. Cool the Milk: Let the mixture cool down until it is warm enough to touch (about 110°F). Stir it occasionally to prevent the skin from forming. These temperatures are important so it is better to use a thermometer. Although if the milk is down or up by few degrees it should not matter.
  3. Thin the yogurt with Milk: Take a yogurt starter kit, add cultures into the milk. The quantity of the cultures will be provided on the pack). Whisk the milk until yogurt is dissolved in the milk.
  4. Pour The Milk: Take sterilized jars. Pour the milk and yogurt mixture into it making sure to leave some space on the bottom. Close the lids and place in a warm place away from direct sunlight somewhere the temperature is around 100 degrees Fahrenheit (or 38 degrees Celsius), perhaps next to radiator or boiler.
  5. Wait for the yogurt to set: Leave the jars for 4 hours to overnight for the yogurt to set. The time for yogurt to set depends on the cultures used, temperature of the milk and your yogurt preferences. The longer it sits, the thicker and more tart it becomes. If this is the first time, you are trying then check after 4 hours and stop when it reaches the taste and consistency you need. Note: Avoid jostling or stirring until the yogurt is set.
  6. Making the next batch: Once you made one batch of yogurt, you can use some of it to make next batch. After few batches, if you observe some odd flavors or if it’s not culturing quite quickly, then it means some outside bacteria has taken up the residence. As long as the yogurt is good to taste, you are safe to use it. To make a fresh, you can use a store brought commercial yogurt in your next batch.

Is Greek Yogurt Good for Yeast Infections?

Yes, Greek yogurt for yeast infection is also considered to be safe. In fact, it is probably the best yogurt for yeast infection. The benefits of Greek yogurt are as same as normal yogurt. Avoid using sweetened and flavored sweet yogurt as the yeast feeds on sugars and worsen the infection. You can use Greek Yogurt for both topical application and internal consumption.

How Long Does It Take Yogurt to Cure a Yeast Infection?

How to Prevent Yeast Infections?

It is always advisable to take enough measure to prevent yeast infections from occurring. Paying attention to few things will help us to maintain a healthy vagina.

  • Moisture can be lead to yeast infection. So, it is very important to keep the vagina dry. Even if you apply the yogurt, after rinsing off, dry the affected area thoroughly.
  • When you are suffering from yeast infection, avoid wearing tight clothes as they can trap moisture which helps yeast to grow.
  • Avoid taking antibiotics as it kills off the good bacteria.
  • Wear cotton underwear as it ensures there is no sweating in the genital area.
  • Always use unscented tampons. The scented tampons contain chemicals which will disrupt the pH balance in the vagina which result in yeast infection.
  • Avoid taking estrogen-based contraceptives as they can change the hormonal levels which increase the yeast infection. If you need a contraceptive then choose progesterone based one.
  • Avoid taking stress as it will have a negative impact on the immune system which allows the yeast to grow.
  • Avoid using soaps, feminine perfumes, sprays, scented toilet papers, talc, douches and deodorized tampons as they affect the natural cleansing process and pH balance.
  • As yeast thrives on sugar, it is better to avoid sugar intake until the infection is completely gone.
  • Eat a well balanced nutritious diet which contains enough vitamins and minerals to maintain your immunity.
  • Even though yogurt is effective in treating a yeast infection, if it is not working for you or the condition worsens, it is better to consult a doctor.
  • If you are pregnant, suffering from yeast infection for the first time, or suffering on regular basis then it is better to get examined by a physician.

And how many time do i do that a day. And im also going to buy the one tab oral pill as well. Just to make sure it really kicks it out of there. Although im not itchy from it i have burning after i go to bathroom. Huge lower back pain amd front stomach pain to

    1. As per your description of pain in lower back and front stomach, it is better to consult the doctor to find out whether the infection has spread to other parts. Meanwhile, you can repeat the tampon with yogurt method 3 times a day.

    1. We recommend you to consult a gynaecologist to get it removed. If garlic is left for a longer time it can cause damage to the mucous membranes of the vagina.

      1. How do you rinse the inside of your vagina to get the yogurt out? I used strawberry banana yogurt, now that Im reading all this I want to rinse it out and use plain yogurt. I can honestly say since I inserted the yogurt I haven’t had any abdominal pain. I just did it last night should I insert the plain yogurt tonight since I use flavored yogurt last night and it wasn’t the correct one?

        1. Your vagina will naturally move the yogurt from it. You can just rinse with water to remove it. Yes, now onwards, make sure to use only plain yogurt.

          1. Can you tell us your problem in detail so that is can be helpful for us to provide a solution.

  3. I had an allergic reaction to some antibiotics from a uti and I put yogurt down there overnight because it was very irritated and I also had a yeast infection. Should I do it another night?

      1. I can inject the yogurt and leave it over night? Or is that bad? I want to try this because my discharge looks like cottage cheese and well, I already know it’s because of a yeast infection. I just want to make sure it will be okay leaving the yogurt in there over night while sleeping

        1. Yes, you can leave yogurt overnight just make sure to wear a pad to avoid mess. It helps to collect any dripping yogurt from the vagina.

  4. My plain yogurt still has a little sugar in it, is that ok if I’m inserting it? And can I eat flavored yogurt? I don’t like garlic

    1. It is better to try unsweetened yogurt as it yeast thrives on sugar. So only use yogurt with no sugar. You can eat flavoured yogurt but reduce sugar content in your diet. If you don’t like garlic try the remedies which don’t contain garlic.

      1. I have a yeast infection my Dr proscribed me the Fla pull the one tablet but I inserted plain. 0 fat yogurt it’s relieve the itch a little and calm sum the discharge down its painful around the outside of my virgins the part right before you enter the vigina

      1. The yoghurt I found is a plain smooth medium fat, not low fat. Also it doesn’t have words like unsweetened or unflavoured. Is it OK to use?

          1. I did the treatment , applied unsweetened yougert, it was really effective i am so happy

    1. Once ive inserted yogurt with a siringe , how do i keep the yogurt from coming out for an hour ?
Do i have to be laying down ?

      1. you can lay down if you want but it is better to wear a sanitary pad to collect the draining yogurt. Yes, you can also try apple cider vinegar. You can find more information in this article -http://wellness.guide/apple-cider-vinegar-for-yeast-infection/

  6. Idk if I have a yeast infection I felt itchy like crazy and just a mild burning I used monistat 7 the first night and I felt a little relief then by the 3rd night as I insert the cream I felt the worst burning sensation down their why is that?? I tried again the next night and same result what can I do to and what kind of infection do I have??

    1. You have a yeast infection!!!! It’s okay that the monostat external cream hurts it hurts a lot of people. I get the most relief from yogurt applied directly to my vagina

    1. Apply it and don’t wear underwear as it can create a moist environment which helps the yeast to grow. Apply and leave it for an hour and wipe off. If you have severe infection then you can leave it overnight and rinse in the morning. Apart from that make sure the vagina is completely dry and avoid wearing tight clothing.

  7. After insert the yogurt and after couple hours a lot of discharge that looks like cottage cheese came down. Is that normal and should I do another treatment of the yogurt

    1. Don’t worry, it may be because the treatment is working in reducing the infection. Try it for another few times and check if the symptoms have been reduced or not. If not please discontinue this treatment and try different ingredients like apple cider vinegar. You can find other remedies in this article – http://wellness.guide/yeast-infection/

    1. It is better to apply yogurt directly instead of using it on a pad. Sanitary pad doesn’t let air circulation and create moisture environment which helps the yeast growth. Apply the yogurt directly and leave it for an hour, rinse off with water and dry it completely.

    1. Hey I’m 12 weeks preg have also had burning down below for 1 month. I’ve had 2 weeks antibiotics and pessary tablets for 6 days. Drinking plenty water and also cranberry juice which is disgusting. How did you get rid of it.

    1. No, the brand doesn’t matter but make sure the yogurt is unsweetened and unflavoured. Usually it doesn’t cause any bad smell.

  8. How do i know its yeast or fungal infection? Or let me just say what’s the difference between yeast and fungal infection?

    1. Yeast is considered one of the groups in the fungus kingdom. Candida is the most common yeast. Though it is present in our body, it doesn’t create any problem generally. If any factors like unbalanced hormones, sugar in the body tissue triggers its multiple growths then it leads to an infection. A fungal infection can be caused due to yeast or mold. The symptoms and areas of infection are different from one another. A yeast infection can develop on intestines, skin and genitals.

  9. If I use the yogurt in a syringe over night is that OK? And how many times a day and how often do I use it? How long before you see results I have Bv

    1. No, don’t leave the application overnight. You can repeat the application once in a day until you reduce the yeast infection.

  10. I’ve been dealing with cottage cheese discharge, no itch, no odor since June. I’ve used Monistat, diflucan 3xs, boric acid suppositories and tetrazol cream and nothing has worked. I then went to a holistic doctor who put me on a 21 day detox with a supplement called Zymex. It’s so frustrating. This has cost me over $1500 so far.

Long story short, I’ve been using AVC as a douche since Sunday afternoon. When I checked to see if there is yeast, my discharge is milky and I’m hoping that I don’t have cottage cheese again. Should I continue using the AVC and go into using the yogurt tampon?

    1. If the yeast infection has cleared you can discontinue the douching process. For regular maintenance to prevent recurrence, you can add some apple cider vinegar to the bath water and soak in it for 20 minutes.

    2. Hi
Seems like I am dealing with the same issue you have mentioned. I’ve taken the exact ssme medications did you ever get rid of the infection?

      Its a true nightmare

  11. For a few months I’ve been having a white, greyish discharge and a strong odor. I don’t have any problems with itching or burning after I pee. It’s just mainly the smell. I’m not sure what’s going on and don’t really want to see a doctor. I believe the smell isn’t coming from the outside but in the inside. What should I do ?

    1. Try the methods mentioned above for few days and check if there is any positive improvement. If you don’t have any positive improvement, then stop trying the method. Yet, we recommend to consult a doctor to diagnose the problem.

  12. I am searching for unsweetened yogurt, I came across a few of them that say that they are plain and have zero sugar but when I look through the label it has 6g of sugar, can I still use this?

    1. Yes, you can use it. Yogurt naturally contains a small amount of sugar which is in lactose form and fructose free.

    1. It is okay to wash your vagina with warm water as it provides relief from pain and itching. Avoid using hot water as it can worsen the skin condition.

  13. I d,nt understand the point of keeping the vagina dry, is it the external part or the internal to be kept dry? and is it okay to insert unfrozen yogurt into the vagina,,i mean should i just coat the normal tampon with yogurt and insert it in?

    1. The external part of the vagina should be kept dry because moisture encourages the yeast growth. Yes, unfrozen yogurt can be inserted. Yes, you have to coat the tampon with yogurt and insert it into the vagina.

      1. The “external part of the vagina” is not the vagina! It is called the VULVA. Please use the correct terms to eliminate confusion. You state that it is important to keep the vagina dry. This is impossible! Use the correct terms, please!

  14. i have a yeast infection / clumpy discharge it’s been a couple of days but i think I’m gonna get my period soon.
i have plain double cream yogurt, is it safe to use it? its just the yeast and it’s a lot i don’t have irritation or any odor.

  15. If I use the syringe method, it means the yogurt will be all the way inside the vagina right? How will I rinse inside the vagina? Do I just have to wash outside (the opening) part? Or how do i take it out completely? Will the rogurt come out on its own? I have been getting yeast infections now and then, will it help in stopping this?

    1. The yogurt will get discharged slowly from the vagina. You can wear a pad to avoid the mess and stains. You have to wash the vulva (the opening part of the vagina) with water. Yes, it will treat and prevent the yeast infections.

  16. I’m a bit confused. So, after you insert the yogurt via syringe you leave it for an hour? Then clean/rinse the vulva with water, but do not rinse internally? Rather, just allow the internal to evacuate/leak out on its own over time?

  17. Been to doctors though had water infection did strip test was negative but still got spmptons do you think it could be a yeast infection would using yogurt do any harm if tried it

  34. Hello, in some of your comments you mention it is okay to keep the yogurt insertion in overnight (I want to use the tampon method) but in one of your comments you told someone not to leave it in overnight via the syringe method. Please confirm when it is acceptable to leave the yogurt in overnight and when it should be avoided.

    1. Actually, once you apply yogurt into the vagina via syringe, it comes out some time. That is why we recommended to wear a sanitary pad. If the sanitary pad or leaking yogurt is kept overnight, it may create a moist environment which can help the yeast to thrive. That is why mentioned not to leave it overnight. However, as you are interested in tampon method, you can leave it overnight.

        1. For normal topical application, we don’t recommend wearing an underwear. But if you are using syringe method, then you to wear a sanitary pad to collect the yogurt leaking from the vagina. In this case, you can wear a cotton underwear that lets enough air circulation.

  38. I have never tried the yogurt method. I want to try the inserting the “yogurt-sicles”. I got plain non-fat chobani Greek yogurt, the nutrition facts say it has 4g of sugar but sugar is not listed in the ingredients and it is plain unflavored. Is this ok to use?

  39. I bought stonyfield organic plain nonfat Greek yogurt. It doesn’t say it doesn’t have sugar but on the back it says 9 grams of sugar. Also it has 5 cutler ingredients but not the one you said. Can I still use it?

    1. Hey, I could use some help?

I’m in my early teenage years and I’ve been having recurring cottage cheese discharge and I’ve been itching, too. I’ve tried my best to keep myself dry after going to the bathroom and taking showers (also I need to know just in case I should stop or not: would Equate Feminine PH Balance Wash be okay or should I stop using it? because I need to know). But would it be okay to eat yogurt? Because my dad’s calling the doctor on Monday to try to schedule the appointment to be sooner. So is it okay to eat yogurt now?

And what foods would you recommend for breakfast, lunch and dinner so I can keep a balanced diet? Just wondering because right now I’ve been eating strawberries, yogurt, plain chicken and I’m just trying to stick with healthy stuff because I’ve had a bad diet up until now and I’d like to start a balanced one to prevent any bad stuff from happening again.

That monster just WON’T leave my body until now. I have just started the so called “Candida diet” 25days now. It seems that I’m getting better, I try to avoid sugar added food whenever possible, But also at the same time, taking Diflucan as prescribed by specialist doctor. And, I take probiotic capsule, drink coconut oil, drink apple cider vinegar everyday since I started the candida diet……..

BUT!! I can still see some white discharge flow out tgt with urine, which I believe the candida is still inside my body (though the amount of discharge greatly reduced by now). Can you have a view on what is that white discharge? is this a sign that the yeast/candida still inside my body? I wanted to clear that discharge. Please help!

    1. You may be observing the white discharge flow out with urine because the infection might be leaving the body. That is the reason the amount of discharge is slowly decreasing. So, we recommend following the same routine for few more weeks to see whether you are having clear discharge. And can you let us know which candida diet are your trying? Is it the one we have presented in our website or any other?

      1. Thank you for your view!

Avoided fruit at all. Drink raw apple cider vinegar (3 teaspoon mixed with water, twice a day, morning and night) and virgin coconut oil daily (1teaspoon with empty stomach), eat plain yogurt.
