1) Tea Bags

If you have a small sunburned area then this process is sufficient to get relief. Used tea bags can also be used for this process.

  • Bring some water to boil.
  • Remove from the flame and add 1 – 2 tea bags into it.
  • Let it steep for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Wring out the tea bags and place them on the affected area.
  • Leave until they dry out.
  • If you want to keep for more time, wet the tea again with water or tea solution and repeat the application.
  • Repeat the application few times a day.
  • Alternatively, you can chill the tea bags for few minutes and apply for extra cooling effect.

2) Tea Bath

It is not possible to cover a lot of sunburned skin with few tea bags. If you have a lot of sunburned skin then you should try this process to get relief.

  • Bring 4 – 5 cups of water to boil.
  • Once boiled, remove from the flame and add six tea bags into it.
  • Let it steep for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Remove the tea bags and pour the infused solution into your tepid bath water.
  • Soak for 20 minutes and bath with cold water.
  • Repeat the process 2 times a day until the sunburn is cured.

3) Tea Treatment

This process stops the pain immediately and helps the burn to turn into a tan rather than peeling.

  • Boil 4 cups of water.
  • Add 5 – 6 tea bags into the water and let it boil for few minutes.
  • Now remove from the flame and let it cool down to room temperature.
  • Soak a washcloth in the tea solution for few minutes.
  • Wring out the excess and place the washcloth on sunburn.
  • Let it rest for 30 minutes at least.
  • Remove the washcloth, rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat 2 – 3 times a day to notice results.
  • Alternatively, you can soak a shirt in the solution, wring out the excess and wear it.

4) Iced Tea Compress

This process provides a cooling effect to the sunburned area. The coolness will reduce the irritation, burning sensation and itchiness.

  • Brew 4 cups of tea.
  • Pour the solution into an ice tray and refrigerate.
  • Once ice cubes are set, remove the cubes.
  • Tie them in a washcloth or zip lock bag.
  • Place it on sunburn area.
  • Let it sit for 20 minutes and pat dry.
  • Repeat the application daily.
  • Alternatively, you can rub the ice cubes on the sunburn area.

5) Steeped Tea for Sunburn

  • Bring a cup of water to boil.
  • Add 2 – 3 teaspoons of tea powder or leaves.
  • Simmer for 5 minutes and remove from the flame.
  • Let the solution cool down to room temperature.
  • Using a cotton ball or cotton swab, apply the solution on the affected areas.
  • Let the application dry completely.
  • Reapply the solution once the application dries out. You can apply the solution several times for relief.
  • Rinse off with water and pat dry.
  • Repeat the process once or twice in a day.

6) Tea with Mint Leaves

Mint leaves are known for their natural cooling effect. It soothes the sunburn and provides relief from the pain and itchiness.

  • Boil 1 quart of water.
  • To a bowl add 5 tea bags (detach the strings) and 3 cups of fresh mint leaves.
  • Add boiled 1 quart of water into the bowl.
  • Cover the bowl and let it steep for an hour.
  • Strain the mixture and let the solution chill in the refrigerator for few minutes.
  • Dip cotton pads or soft cloth and apply it on the sunburn affected areas.
  • Let it rest until it dries.
  • Remove the cloth and pat dry.
  • Rinse with water only if necessary.
  • Repeat the application several times a day.
  • Alternatively, you can pour or soak in the mixture for relief.

7) Herbal Tea with Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Bring a cup of water to boil.
  • Add 2 tablespoons each of lavender flowers (dried), dried mint leaves and dried plantain leaf.
  • Remove from the heat and let it cool down.
  • Once cooled, strain the mixture.
  • Add an equal amount of apple cider vinegar to the cooled mixture.
  • Mix well and pour the solution into a spray bottle.
  • Spray the solution on the affected areas and let it dry completely.
  • Repeat spraying whenever required or several times a day.

Tips and Precautions:

  • Drink plenty of tea so that the benefits of tea can work from inside as well.
  • Apart from using a single variety of tea, you can try different teas for a single method.
  • Use a sunscreen lotion with high SPF to protect your skin from harmful sun rays.
  • If you are going to stay out for a long time, reapply sunscreen lotion every few hours.
  • If it can be avoided, stay out of the sun during peak hours.
  • Wear loose fitted clothing. Prefer light colors and cotton fabrics.
  • Use hats, scarf or other accessories to protect your head.
  • Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection to protect your eyes.
  • Don’t try to remove the peeling skin caused by sunburn.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. People who stay hydrated are less likely to develop third-degree sunburns.
  • If the sunburn affected area is developing blisters consult for immediate help.
