Home remedy for BaldnessThere are many names for having no hair on your head, and for some people, it can be a real problem. It can effect both genders, but usually occurs in men.

Baldness is caused by the clogging of hair follicles, which can occur due to: hormonal conditions, genetic factors or any hereditary factors, stress, age factor, burns or over exposure to the sun or dust, unbalanced diet, chemotherapy treatment for cancer, scalp infections, quick weight loss, birth control oral contraceptives, pregnancy, any health disorders, etc.

Several other symptoms that accompany baldness are: a receding hairline, rapid loss of hair, stress, incomplete hair loss on the scalp, quick weight loss, hair thinning, improper blood circulation into the scalp, etc.

Home Remedies for Baldness:

There are many treatments available in the market that can be expensive. However here are few natural and herbal home remedies that will treat the baldness wsithout side effects.

1. Olive oil:

Olive oil is always considered as the great remedy for almost all the hair problems. It enhances the hair to grow on the area where the bald patches occur.

Method – 1: (Olive Oil Hair Pack)

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil – enough to apply to your hair
  • Cinnamon powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Honey – 1 to 3 teaspoons
  • Mild shampoo
  • Microwave safe bowl or pan

Process:

  • Warm olive oil either by microwave or stove
  • Add honey and cinnamon powder.
  • Mix it well and apply on the scalp and hair thoroughly.
  • Let it sit for about 15 – 20 minutes and then wash it off with mild shampoo followed by water.
  • This process has to be followed 2 – 3 times a week.

Method – 2: (Olive Oil with Cumin Seeds)

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil – 1/2 cup
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon

Process:

  • Add cumin seeds to olive oil.
  • Leave it on for about 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Gently massage on bald patches for 5 – 10 minutes.
  • This mixture can be stored, so apply regularly.

Method – 3: (Olive Oil Overnight Treatment)

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil
  • Towel or shower cap
  • Shampoo

Process:

  • Take sufficient amount of olive oil and apply this throughout the hair and scalp.
  • Massage your hair before going to bed.
  • Place a shower cap on your hair and a towel on your pillows and leave on overnight.
  • Rinse your hair with shampoo and water the next morning.

2. Lemon Seeds and Peppercorns:

Lemon seeds and peppercorns help to increase the blood circulation on the scalp, encouraging hair growth. Do not be alarmed if you feel a little irritation. This process increases the blood circulation to hair follicles

Ingredients:

  • Lemon seeds – 7
  • Black peppercorns – 10

Process:

  • Crush lemon seeds and peppercorns into a fine powder.
  • Apply to the bald patches and wait about 10 – 15 minutes.
  • If you feel very dry apply little lemon juice ..
  • Apply twice a day for a few weeks.

3. Fenugreek Seeds:

Fenugreek is an excellent remedy to treat a range of hair problems. They have hormone precursors that help to replenish the hair growth. These seeds are good source of nicotinic acid and protein that helps to rebuild and strengthen the hair shafts.

Method – 1: (Fenugreek Paste)

Ingredients:

  • Fenugreek Seeds – 1 to 2 tablespoons
  • Water

Process:

  • Grind fenugreek seeds and add water to make a fine paste.
  • Apply to the bald patches and let it sit for an hour or two.
  • Rinse the hair with water and pat it dry
  • Repeat the same process 2 – 3 times a week.

Method – 2:

Ingredients:

  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Coconut oil

Process:

  • Heat coconut oil for a few minutes.
  • Add fenugreek seeds and fry it for a couple more minutes.
  • Allow to cool for few minutes if it’s summer, or just strain and use in the winter.
  • Apply this on scalp and hair and massage gently on circular motion.
  • Let it sit for about 30 – 45 minutes and then wash with mild shampoo.
  • Repeat 2-3 times a week.

4. Castor Oil:

Castor oil improves your hair condition and aids in their growth. It contains minerals, vitamin E, proteins, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties which help to clear infections related to skin and scalp and impeding the hair growth. It improves the circulation of blood flow to the hair follicles and nourishes the hair roots. It makes the hair stronger and longer without any breaking.

Use unrefined castor oil to get more nutrients and healing properties This oil has viscous consistency, so to make it easier to spread evenly throughout the hair, you have to mix this oil with any carrier or lighter oils like olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, etc.

Method – 1: (Castor Oil Hot Treatment)

Ingredients:

  • Castor oil
  • Plastic cap
  • Shampoo

Process:

  • Heat castor oil for a few minutes and apply to the scalp and hair.
  • Massage for a few minutes to stimulate the hair growth.
  • Let it sit for overnight by covering your hair with shower cap or plastic cap
  • Wash your hair thoroughly with shampoo the next morning.
  • Repeat regularly.

Method – 2: (Castor Oil with Almond Oil)

Castor oil when mixed with almond oil creates smooth and more fragrant oil that easily spreads from root to tips. Almond oil has vitamin E, which strengthens the hair strands and follicles.

Ingredients:

  • Castor oil
  • Almond oil
  • Shower cap
  • Conditioner

Process:

  • Mix a small amount of castor oil and almond oil.
  • Apply from the scalp to the roots.
  • Massage your scalp then cover your hair with a shower cap and leave for 2 – 3 hours.
  • Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.
  • Regular application will yield effective results.

Method – 3: (Castor Oil with Hair Conditioner)

Ingredients:

  • Castor oil
  • Hair conditioner

Process:

  • Add a few drops of castor oil to your daily conditioner.
  • Stir it well and apply this to the scalp and hair line after shampooing.
  • Do this every day after shampooing.

Method – 4: (Castor Oil with Lemon Essential Oil)

Ingredients:

  • Castor oil – 8 tablespoons
  • Lemon essential oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Empty bottle
  • Shower cap
  • Cold water
  • Mild shampoo

Process:

  • Pour castor oil and lemon essential oil in a bottle and shake to mix.
  • Pour few drops of this oil into your hands and apply to the scalp.
  • Massage it gently for 2 – 4 minutes.
  • Let it sit for about 15 – 20 minutes or overnight, wearing a shower cap.
  • Wash your hair with cold water followed by mild shampoo
  • Apply this daily.

5. Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera contains a lot of vitamins and minerals which makes the hair to grow.  The enzymes present in the aloe vera opens clogged hair follicles and controls the hair fall. It has anti-parasitic properties that help to clear the scalp infections.

Method – 1:

Ingredients:

  • Aloe vera
  • Lukewarm water

Process:

  • Squeeze the gel from an aloe vera leaf.
  • Apply this gel or juice on the scalp and massage for few minutes.
  • Wait for few hours or overnight and rinse it with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat this 3 – 4 times a week.
  • Note: You can use equal quantities of aloe gel and honey. Make sure to wash hair after 45 minutes

6. Onion:

Onion juice cleanses the scalp and hair follicles and promotes thick hair with its natural anti-oxidant compound catalase.

Method – 1: (Onion Juice)

Ingredients:

  • Onions
  • Cloth or sieve
  • Water
  • Mild shampoo
  • Filter or squeezer

Process:

  • Peel an onion and separate the inner red part.
  • Squeeze out the juice using a mixer, grater, or your hands.
  • Take a cloth or sieve to filter the liquid and to remove all the solids.
  • Apply to the scalp only.
  • Massage gently for about 8 – 10 minutes and then wash with water.
  • Using a mild shampoo can get rid of the smell.

Method – 2: (Onion and Honey)

Ingredients:

  • Onions
  • Honey

Process:

  • Mix onion juice and organic honey.
  • Mix well and rub onto the bald patches.
  • Alternatively, rub half an onion on the bald patches followed by honey.
  • Let it sit for few minutes and then wash it with water.
  • Apply regularly.

7. Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil is one of the best natural oil that promotes hair growth. It has antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties that help to treat hair and scalp problems. It will improve the scalp’s blood circulation and boost the nutrients level. It contains linoleic acid that keeps the hair well hydrated and maintains the elasticity. Oleic acid in coconut oil helps to get thick and strong hair

Method – 1:

Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil
  • Shower cap
  • Shampoo

Process:

  • Apply a sufficient amount of coconut oil directly on the scalp and hair
  • Massage gently for few minutes by focusing more on bald patches.
  • Leave it on for 5 – 10 minutes and then comb your hair.
  • Cover your hair with a shower cap and allow it to sit for about 4 – 5 hours or overnight.
  • Rinse your hair twice with mild shampoo.

Method – 2:

Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil
  • Lemon juice
  • Cold water

Process:

  • Mix 2 parts of coconut oil and 1 part of lemon juice.
  • Apply this on the hair, particularly on the bald patches.
  • Start massaging from the roots to the tips.
  • Let it sit for about 4 – 6 hours or overnight.
  • Wash your hair with cool water followed by mild shampoo.
  • You can also use either almond oil or olive oil in the place of lemon juice.
  • Repeat this process regularly.

8. Hibiscus:

Hibiscus is a traditional medicine that has been used to treat hair loss in many regions of the world.

Ingredients:

  • Hibiscus flowers
  • Curry leaves
  • Coconut oil
  • Indian gooseberry (amla)

Process:

  • Put all ingredients in a pan and boil for a few minutes.
  • Allow to cool and then strain the oil.
  • Apply this to the hair and scalp and massage gently.
  • Leave for about 30 – 45 minutes and then wash with water and shampoo.
  • Repeat this daily.

Method – 2:

Ingredients:

  • Hibiscus flowers
  • Water
  • Lime juice

Process:

  • Add hibiscus and water to a pan.
  • Boil for a few minutes and then add a little lemon juice.
  • Stir it well, strain, and apply this to the bald patches.
  • Allow it to sit for few minutes before washing with the water.
  • Continue regularly.

9. Indian Gooseberry or Amla:

Indian gooseberry or amla is widely used in the hair treatments especially for hair loss or baldness. It is rich in vitamin C and iron, has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant and other exfoliating properties that help to keep the scalp away from the dust and other infections. It makes hair healthy by opening up the clogged hair follicles.

Method – 1:

Ingredients:

  • Indian gooseberry juice / pulp – 1 tablespoon
  • Lemon juice – 1 tablespoon
  • Shower cap
  • Shampoo
  • Bowl

Process:

  • Pour amla pulp and lemon juice into a bowl.
  • Mix well and apply this on bald patches.
  • Massage it gently for few minutes and wrap in a shower cap.
  • Leave overnight then wash with shampoo and water.
  • Regularly follow this process.

Method – 2:

Ingredients:

  • Gooseberries
  • Coconut oil
  • Saucepan

Process:

  • Cut a gooseberry into pieces.
  • Dry these pieces in the shade.
  • Heat coconut oil in a sause pan.
  • Now add dried gooseberries and boil till the hard part of the berry turns to dark.
  • Boil for a short while before turning off the heat.
  • Allow it to cool then take the amla pieces from this warm oil.
  • Apply oil on scalp and massage gently from the roots to the tip.
  • Repeat this process as needed.

Method – 3:

Ingredients:

  • Gooseberry powder – 2 teaspoons
  • Water – 1 cup
  • Honey – 1 teaspoon
  • Yogurt – 2 teaspoons
  • Pan

Process:

  • Boil the water, then add Indian gooseberry powder and stir well.
  • Add honey and yogurt and mix.
  • Apply this paste on the hair roots and strands.
  • let it sit for about 30 – 45 minutes
  • Wash it with water and repeat this for 2 – 3 times a week.
  • Alternatively, soak the dried gooseberry in water overnight and rinse your strands with this water in the morning.

10. Red Gram and Pigeon Pea:

Pigeon pea has a strengthening property that treats the baldness effectively. Red gram is used as common ingredients in many hair care and growth formulae.

Ingredients:

  • Red gram
  • Pigeon pea
  • Shampoo

Process:

  • Mix equal amounts of red gram and pigeon pea.
  • Grind this to make a thin paste.
  • Apply this on the scalp and allow it to sit for 15 – 30 minutes.
  • Wash with shampoo and re-apply regularly.

11. Henna:

Henna has been used from many years in conditioning the hair. When mixed with mustard oil it will cure your baldness problem.

Ingredients:

  • Henna leaves – 100gms
  • Mustard oil – 250 gms
  • Airtight bottle

Process:

  • Boil mustard oil, add henna leaves and continue to boil.
  • Allow it cool down and strain.
  • Store it in an airtight container or bottle.
  • Apply this oil to the hair and massage your scalp.
  • Apply daily.

12. Liquorice and Milk:

Liquorice is a medicinal herb that helps to promote the hair growth. It has the ability to counter act on testosterone induced alopica, effectively stopping the baldness. Milk helps to nourish the hair and enhance its growth.

Ingredients:

  • Liquorice powder – 2 tablespoons
  • Milk – 4 tablespoon
  • Saffron – a pinch

Process:

  • Stir milk, liquorice powder and saffron to make fine paste.
  • Apply this paste on the bald patches.
  • Leave it on for overnight and wash it off in the morning
  • Repeat the same process regularly.

13. Camphor Oil:

Camphor oil is very effective in preventing hair loss that occurs due to stress and anxiety. Camphor contains antiseptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties that help to maintain a healthy hair growth. It has natural relaxant that relieves you from the stress and other nervous tensions which will help you to calm down quickly. This oil stimulates the additional blood flow to the scalp when you massage your hair with this oil.

Add few drops of camphor oil to your regular hair oil or hair care lotion and use this to massage your hair daily.

14. Saw Palmetto:

Saw palmetto is a Native American remedy for hair problems. It blocks the enzymes and converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, which leads to hair loss. Get the correct dosage from your doctor, especially those who take blood thinners or who have hemophiliac and those who suffer from the breast cancer.

Tips to prevent the Baldness:

Here are few tips which help to promote hair growth.

  • Massage your hair with olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil at night time before you go to bed and leave it for overnight.
  • Regularly wash your hair with cold and clean water, rubbing your scalp with your fingertips.
  • Massage the hair roots with few drops of coconut milk.
  • Avoid sharp clips, spiky brushes, tight rubber bands, etc.
  • Avoid over combing the hair as this makes the hair dry and damaged.
  • Caffeine is the ingredient of coffee which helps to rejuvenate the hair. Apply caffeine regularly to combat the baldness.
  • Always take a proper rest to de-stress.
  • Limit your intake of spicy or salty food.
  • Quit smoking and stop taking alcohol to have proper blood circulation all over the body.
  • Apply yogurt on the head as hair mask for 15 minutes or else simply eat a cup of yogurt regularly to promote the hair growth.
  • Just do simple exercises like rubbing the fingernails of the left and right hand with each other. But don’t rub the thumbnails as it will promote the growth of moustache and beard. Avoid these exercises if you’re pregnant.
  • Green tea also promotes the hair growth on the bald patches with its natural antioxidants. So apply this herbal tea on the scalp by concentrating more on the affected area. Leave it for an hour or two and wash it with water to prevent baldness.
  • Drink plenty of water and consume fresh fruits and vegetables. Include the food which is rich in proteins, omega – 3 fatty acids, vitamin C, iron and zinc in your diet.
  • Curry leaves are an effective remedy that works against the baldness. Boil curry leaves in coconut oil till the leaves turn black and remove the leaves. Then massage the hair gently with this warm oil to promote the hair growth.
  • Rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar will prevent hair fall or you can apply ACV on scalp and hair. Leave it for overnight and wash in the morning
  • Drink a combinational juice of spinach and lettuce everyday.

Preventive steps:

There are many causes for baldness but you can prevent this problem by adopting these measures.

  • Avoid the constant usage of heating, dying and drying your hair.
  • Always use protein rich shampoos and conditioners.
  • Limit or stop the usage of hair styling gels.
  • Massage your hair with hot oil regularly for 20 minutes to increase the blood circulation in your scalp.
  • Apply oil to your hair at least 2 – 3 times a week and leave overnight.
  • Never use harsh shampoos and apply conditioners after shampooing.

Be patient while following these remedies as it takes a period of few weeks to have more visible results. Remember to consult the dermatologist if there are any problems.

    I just want to know which type of olive oil is best suited for hair? There are various types like extra virgin olive oil, pomace, refined, etc. Also if you can suggest any brand available in the market, that would be grateful.
